10 Savvy Ways to Help Young Children Adapt to Wearing Masks

Wearing masks can help reduce the spread of COVID-19, but getting young children to comply can be challenging, to say the least. Patience and practice is key. Here are 10 tips for helping children get used to wearing masks in public:

1. Place a mask on a favorite doll or stuffed animal to model mask wearing.
2. Allow children to decorate their masks with markers or stickers.
3. Wear a mask yourself, & have family & friends wear one during visits as well.
4. Count or use a timer to slowly extend the time your child is expected to wear a mask in order to earn a reward. (This may initially be a few seconds.)
5. Point out other people in your community who are wearing masks.
6. Explain how many heroes wear masks to keep themselves & others safe, like doctors, nurses and firefighters.
7. Try masks or bandannas made of different materials to minimize sensitivity to certain fabric textures.
8. If making masks at home, use fabric in your child's favorite color or that depicts favorite animals or characters.
9. Draw masks on characters that they see in coloring books.
10. Consider comfort. Add buttons to a headband or use ribbon to keep masks off sensitive ears.
