"I'm Bored" Busters: 15 Pretend Play Ideas for Kids

Learning through pretend play is an important part of childhood. It helps develop creativity, social skills, communication & problem solving. While parents, teachers & caregivers can help provide the framework, it's best to step back and see where a child's imagination can take them. Here are 15 ideas to get kids started:

1. Backyard Expedition

Fill a backpack with all the tools needed for a proper expedition— magnifying glass, binoculars, compass, plastic rake & shovel, map, flashlight, & butterfly net.

2. Bubbles & Water Play

Dress the kids in their swimsuits & googles, fill plastic tubs with soapy water & let children play with bath toys, squirt bottles, plastic bowls & cups.

3. Mad Scientists

Make a pretend science lab from things you already have in your kitchen. Gather jars & containers in various sizes & shapes, along with eye droppers & funnels. Let kids mix up solutions of tinted water & pantry items like cupcake sprinkles, sugar & spices.

4. Set Up Shop

Kids should choose the merchandise they will "sell," decide prices, display products & create a checkout. Encourage them to design a storefront sign & make paper money for "customers" to use in their shop.

5. Zoo Adventure

Using stuffed animals or plastic figures, children can turn an area of their home into their personal, private zoo. Kids can practice sorting skills by deciding which animals belong together in different habitats.

6. Open a Restaurant

Folding tables covered with sheets, scarves or tablecloths can become your child's 5-star restaurant. Fake or real food, paper plates & utensils, & hand-drawn menus complete the scene.

7. Dress Up

Provide a mirror & a suitcase full of old halloween costumes, hats, scarves, beaded necklaces & sunglasses.

8. Car Wash & Repair

Provide a bucket of water, sponges, towels & toolbox for kids to wash & "repair" toy cars, trucks, bikes & wagons.

9. Puppet Show

Wonderfully creative puppets can be made from a simple paper bag & some craft supplies. After making the puppets, kids can stage a show to display their work.

10. Classic Tea Party

A table set with linens, cups, saucers, tiny sandwiches & cookies is a perfect place to practice manners & conversation skills.

11. Mail Delivery

A shoe box with a slot cut into the lid becomes a mailbox to deliver letters & envelopes decorated with stickers, stamps & pictures.

12. Pillow Fort

Drape sheets over tables, throw couch pillows on the floor, & let your little ones build a fort a fort in the living room.

13. School Day

Gather up school supplies, a pile of books, white/chalkboard & a class full of action figures, stuffed animals & dolls. These are the beginnings of a great lesson.

14. Babysitting

There's so much to do while babysitting: dressing, feeding, changing diapers, going for strolls. Kids learn about taking care of others with this role-playing activity.

15. Classic Cardboard Box

There's no limit to the possibilities of an empty cardboard moving box. Making a house, a rocket ship, or a time machine is a classic childhood activity. A few markers & a lot of imagination is all it takes.
