Take a Hike! Go on a Sensory Walk

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum offers free, printable Wonder Workbooks for families & community groups to help children appreciate the wonders of the world around them. Here are some amazing ideas offered to help kids use their senses to explore.

Listen closely. Find a place where you can safely stand or sit, & really listen to the sounds around you. Make your ears as big as you can by putting your hands behind them to help with your listening! Can you birdsong or the sound of the wind?

Tickle a plant. How do the petals, stem or leaves feel on your fingers? Gently touch the trunk of the tree. How does the bark feel? Notice the texture of the leaves.

Watch an ant. Look down! Can you find this common insect. What is the ant doing? What else is around you? Compare what you see to the size and shape of an ant.

Stop & smell the flowers. How do they smell? Sweet? Stinky? Sour? Take a deep breath & smell the air around you.

A few more ideas from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum:

Stomp in a puddle. After a rain, get your boots or old shoes on & play in the puddles!

Check out the shadows. When & where can you find shadow? Observe how they change.

Look up! Sometimes we don’t remember to enjoy observing the sky above us.
